On 21st May 2026, the Bitcoin Sri Lanka community came together to celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day, one of the most important milestones in Bitcoin's history.
Bitcoin Pizza Day commemorates the first known real-world purchase made with Bitcoin. On 22 May 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz purchased two pizzas for 10,000 BTC, marking the first time Bitcoin was successfully used as a medium of exchange for a physical good. What seemed like a simple pizza purchase at the time became a historic moment that demonstrated Bitcoin's potential as money.
To honor this landmark event, members of the Bitcoin Sri Lanka community gathered at Bitcoin House for an evening of learning, discussion, and celebration. Participants explored the significance of the famous pizza transaction, reflected on Bitcoin's journey from an experimental digital currency to a global monetary network, and discussed how Bitcoin continues to reshape the future of money.
The event featured engaging conversations around Bitcoin's history, adoption, and monetary principles, while attendees enjoyed pizza together in the spirit of the original transaction that started it all. It was also a valuable opportunity for newcomers and long-time Bitcoiners alike to connect, share ideas, and strengthen the growing Bitcoin community in Sri Lanka.
Bitcoin Pizza Day reminds us that every major transformation begins with a small step. What started as two pizzas purchased with 10,000 BTC has evolved into a global movement centered on sound money, individual sovereignty, and financial freedom.
